Afforestation and reforestation

What is meant by afforestation and reforestation?

Afforestation or reforestation (also reforestation) refers to two processes in which trees are planted

  • Reforestation involves planting trees on areas that have not been forested for a long time.
  • Reforestation refers to the replanting of trees in forest areas where trees have been damaged by fire, for example, or have been cut down.

Both processes are central to restoring and strengthening forest ecosystems, improving biodiversity and combating climate change.

What contribution does reforestation make to climate protection?

The afforestation and reforestation of forests makes a direct contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change. Trees bind CO₂ during the growth process and thus contribute to reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Alongside the oceans, moors, soils and mangrove forests, forests are one of the most important natural carbon sinks and support the goal of limiting global warming to below two degrees Celsius.

How useful is reforestation in Germany?

Storms, droughts, pest infestations, forest fires and other consequences of climate change can destroy large areas of forest. In Germany alone, an area the size of the Saarland has died off in recent years. Four out of five trees are diseased.

Forests play an important role for all life on our planet and perform vital functions:

  • Regulating the climate
  • Improving air quality
  • Conservation of water resources
  • Habitat for numerous animal and plant species
  • Supporting soil fertility
  • CO₂ storage and O₂ producers

Without forests, we would lose a crucial basis for our food production, fresh water and clean air. In addition, global CO₂ emissions would be higher and global warming would accelerate, leading to increased extreme weather events and a worsening of the global climate crisis. Reforestation is therefore essential to protect humanity's livelihoods and safeguard the health of our planet for future generations.

What needs to be taken into account for afforestation and reforestation?

  • Selection of site-appropriate tree species that are adapted to the climatic and soil conditions
  • Promote diversity of species to increase biodiversity and strengthen the resilience of forests to pests, diseases and climate impacts
  • Careful planning and preparation of the soil for optimum growing conditions
  • Long-term care and protection measures for successful development
  • Involvement of local communities and stakeholders

Reforesting forests: Which trees should be planted?

As already described, when reforesting in Germany, attention should be paid to tree species appropriate to the location. Depending on the forest area, different tree species are suitable depending on the soil, climate and ecological conditions. Native species such as oak or beech, supplemented by climate-resistant trees, are suitable examples. The aim is to create robust mixed forests that adapt to the conditions of the respective area.

What are good reforestation projects?

Good reforestation projects focus on the reforestation of near-natural areas, ideally by planting mixed forests. Compared to monocultures

  • mixed forests promote biodiversity,
  • increase the ecological stability and resistance of forests to pests and climate change.

Reforestation should ideally take place in the fall or spring, as this is when the climate offers the best growing conditions.

When reforesting forests, it is important to choose native tree species and to strive for near-natural reforestation - adapted to the respective forest area. The aim is to create a healthy and resilient ecosystem.

What contribution can companies make to reforestation?

Companies can contribute to reforestation by initiating their own reforestation projects or financially supporting existing projects. They can enter into partnerships with local or global environmental organizations to effectively implement reforestation projects and demonstrate their commitment to climate protection.

With Planted, companies can plant their own company forest near their company location and promote reforestation in Germany. In close cooperation with Planted's internal climate forester, your company will find a suitable area, discuss the site-specific tree species and also receive a digital twin of the forest to communicate its commitment.
