Forests are one of the most important natural climate protectors

Trees are our allies in the fight against climate change: they store CO2, release oxygen, store and filter drinking water and provide a habitat for many animals and other species.

But German forests are in a bad way: three out of four trees have sparse crowns. The consequences of climate change have taken their toll on the forest. In order to protect and preserve the forest, we are therefore providing an impetus for climate-stable mixed forests.

Local tree planting with the highest quality and expertise
Climate forester Jan Borchert

Our co-founder Jan has a degree in forestry and agronomy and is the in-house climate forester at Planted. With the right expertise, he takes care of land selection, collaboration with forest owners and the selection of climate-stable tree species.

The tree species

Which tree species we plant is decided anew for each area. It is important that the tree species can cope with future changes in the climate. So far, we have planted hornbeams, sweet chestnuts, lime trees and sessile oaks, among others.

The planting areas

We plant mixed forests throughout Germany. The areas belong to municipalities, federal states and private individuals. The only important thing for us is that the forest is preserved for the future and fulfills its protective functions.

Trees planted in DE
Forest Bielefeld, Tenge-Rietberg-Straße
This area is located in Holter Forest. We planted Douglas firs and sessile oaks here in fall 2021. Both tree species cope well with drought, which makes them more climate-stable tree species for the increasing extreme weather events of climate change.

Forest Cologne, Volbach
Cologne's Königsforst forest is well-known in the city and a popular local recreation destination. To counteract the forest dieback there, we planted hornbeam, cherry, oak, sessile oak and beech trees together with the local forest and timber company in the fall of 2021. In doing so, we want to help preserve the forest for biodiversity and maintain all its protective functions (air filter, drinking water reservoir, habitat, etc.) for future generations.

Forest Cologne, Kaisereiche
In this area in Cologne's Königsforst forest, we planted oak and hornbeam trees in the fall of 2021. The aim here is also to create a climate-stable mixed forest that can withstand the extreme weather events of climate change and strengthen the forest ecosystem.

Forest Siegen
In spring 2021, we planted beech trees in the Junkernthal area near Siegen to provide an impetus for a climate-stable mixed forest in addition to the conifers already present. The beech is a deciduous tree and can also assert itself well against existing conifers and thus "mix" the forest. After all, intact forests offer much more than just a habitat for animals and plants: they are carbon reservoirs, areas for the creation of fresh air, water reservoirs and recreational areas for us humans.

Forest Cologne, Lehmbach
To counteract forest dieback in Cologne's Königsforst forest, we planted this area with beech and hornbeam trees in the fall of 2021. Together with naturally scattered tree species, they will form a climate-stable mixed forest there in future.

Forest Cologne, Monte Troodelöh
In the fall of 2021, we planted many small cherries in this area in Cologne's Königsforst forest, which, together with the existing tree species, will provide an impetus for a climate-stable mixed forest. This is because cherries are not only well suited to the increasing warm periods due to their drought resistance, but also have an ecological significance due to their fruit, which is an important source of nectar for insects.

Forest Cologne, Lustheider Mühlenweg
We planted oak and fir trees in this area in Cologne's Königsforst forest in the fall of 2021. Fir trees are very stable and highly resistant to storms. Oaks have deep roots and can therefore get enough water to survive even in dry times.

Forest Ruhr area
In spring 2022, we planted our first area near Mühlheim an der Ruhr. Oaks, hornbeams, cherries and rowan trees are now growing in the area. There are also birch and maple seeds, which are carried onto the area by the wind. A total of six climate-stable tree species are growing here, providing an impetus for the mixed forest of the future and counteracting climate change. This will create a new habitat for numerous animal and plant species.

In spring 2021, we planted the sessile oak and hornbeam tree species on our Hansenkopf site in Wiesbaden. Hornbeam is a climate-tolerant tree species, primarily due to its adaptability. It can grow well in warm and dry conditions. The same applies to the sessile oak, which can withstand long periods of drought well due to its deep root system.

FAQ on the mixed forest

How successful are the tree planting campaigns?

Our climate forester Jan selects the right tree species for each specific area based on the conditions of the land. He always makes sure that the tree species are as climate-stable as possible, for example that they have deep roots so that they can access water easily in summer. For these reasons alone, our trees have a very good chance of survival. The planted areas are regularly checked by us and foresters on site to ensure that the planned forest is actually being created.

Can the company's emissions be offset by the trees?

We offset unavoidable CO2 emissions through certified climate protection projects. At Planted, the planting of trees is not purely additional to CO2 compensation. It promotes the forest ecosystem with all its important protective functions.

Forest owners are obliged to plant, why is there a need for Planted?

The need to plant forests in Germany is urgent, as climate change has led to a considerable loss of trees. Despite legal obligations, the financial resources available are often insufficient to adequately fund the necessary reforestation projects. This is where Planted comes in. Together with companies, we are helping to promote reforestation and compensate for the loss of forests. This is the only way we can counteract the challenges of climate change in a timely manner.

How does Planted ensure that the trees grow?

We have our own forester on board, under whose guidance our Planted team also regularly plants trees. This means that the entire Planted team knows how to plant trees in the form of mixed forest. For projects with a large number of trees, the planting is supervised by professional subcontractors. To this end, we have concluded sponsorship agreements with federal states, municipalities and private forest owners. Employees of committed companies can also take part. To ensure that our trees grow up safely, we visit our projects several times a year and regularly exchange information with our partner forests.

Which tree species are planted?

The type of tree we plant depends on the location and is decided individually for each area. Our climate forester Jan knows which trees are best suited to each location. With Planted, we plant mixed forest, as this is more stable than monocultures. Monocultures are particularly susceptible to heat, wind, drought and insects. So far, we have planted the following tree species, among others: oak, hornbeam, alder, lime, sweet chestnut, cherry and fir. They are all robust and have deep roots. As a result, they can easily reach water in the summer and are not blown over by the wind in the fall. The tree species can cope well with the future conditions caused by the climate crisis, which is why we call them climate-stable tree species.

How do you plant trees properly?

In order to plant trees properly and promote a healthy forest, it is important to carefully select suitable areas and plant mixed forests instead of monocultures. The choice of tree species should also be based on the conditions of the area in question. Trees are best planted in the ground during the cold season, when they are dormant and growing less actively. This means less stress for the trees. The trees also have a better chance of taking root, need less watering and have a lower risk of pest infestation.
